This Week in Derby and Other News

Hello everyone! My apologies for the updates and posts being slow this week. I’m in Toronto visiting some friends and releasing my inner nerd at the 2012 Fan Expo so I haven’t been abe to work on any of the big articles I have sitting in my back pockets. But, there are a few things on the go around the prairies so I thought I’d take a moment to go over some of the big upcoming events and anouncements that need to be heard!

Bouts Are Everywhere!

August 25th is jam packed with games across Alberta and Saskatchewan. As such, many of the leagues involved may be running short of referees, NSOs, and volunteers as help is spread far too thin. So if you happen to be planning on going to one of the many derby events goin on tomorrow now, consider contacting somebody within the league to see if they need a hand and colunteer to help out instead of just attending! Not only will you likely get into the game and after-party for free but you’ll be doing your local league a great service!

Anyway, here’s what is happening in the prairies tomorrow night:

Pulp Friction:  The West Yellowhead Roller Derby League is putting on it’s 2nd bout ever in Hinton, Alberta at the Dr. Duncan Murray Recreational Center. Last I heard, the WYRD was still in need of a few skating officials and volunteers so get in contact with them on their Facebook page if you’re free to help!

Vist the Facebook event page HERE.

Attack of the Roller Vixens from Beyond: Swift Current’s Redneck Betties have put a TON of work into setting up this massive invitational event in the town of Maple Creek, Saskatchewan. There will be a rookie starting at 6:00pm and advanced scrimmage starting at 7:30pm. While registrating is probably closed consider seeing if they need a hand with anything or just going out to take in what will surely be a great evening of derby.

Summer Grudgeon III: Clash of the Titans: The Red Deer Roller Derby Association is hosting a wicked double header at the Prarie Pavilion at Westerner Park in Red Deer, Alberta. The first game begins at 6:00pm and features the all male Dreadnaughts who will take on the all female Belladonnas. So it’s boys versus girls in this intense match-up! This will be followed by a game between the RDRDA Nightshades and Oil City’s Tank’er Girls.

Women’s Flat Track Derby Bout: Starting at 7:00pm on the dot, the Lil Chicago Roller Derby league’s Jaw Breakers will play the Wheat City Roller Derby League’s Gang Green for the second time this season. They last skated against one another at the Canadian Forces Base Shilo on May 26th where the Jaw Breakers beat the WCRDL. Will Gang Green get revenge f by beating the Jaw Breakers on their home track? Find out tomorrow night!

Please Welcome the BRDL!

Derby continues to grow as the Battlefords Roller Derby League joins our hard hitting family. This makes league #33 for the Canadian prairies! So please make sure you check out their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/battlefords.league to welcome them into the derby community and, if you happen to be fairly close to North Battleford, see if you can offer them a hand in getting started.

Really digging the recruitment posters the BRDL is putting out there.
