Derby Frontier Celebrates Year One

BIRTHDAY!!!

If you were to tell me a year ago that this lil ol’ blog would eventually get visitors from 51 countries around the world, would one day have over 17,500 individuals read the articles posted, and would be shared by hundreds (and in some cases thousands) of people on social media sites such as Facebook and Reddit… well I would have called you crazy. But here we are, exactly 1 year from when I made my first posting on upcoming bouts in August of 2012 and not only has all of this happened, but Derby Frontier continues to boom in no small part due to the unimaginable support of countless leagues, skaters, coaches, officials, and fans all across North America. To show our appreciation for all of the invaluable contributions you have made by giving us your time, attention, and support, starting August 5th we will be running a number of giveaway contests with prize packs made up of merchandise donated by generous leagues across Western and Central Canada. The details of these Derby Frontier 1 Year Anniversary Giveaways will be posted tomorrow evening right here on the official page, so keep your eyes out. In the mean time, please join us as we look back at some of the big successes Derby Frontier has experienced since June 30th, 2012.

Derby Frontier Goes West (and North)!

When Derby Frontier first started, we focused solely on roller derby news in the provinces of Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. Focusing on these areas allowed us to develop useful resources for the derby communities of the prairies, to foster strong writing standards for our articles, to make mutually beneficial connections with a variety of leagues, and to figure out what kinds of stories people wanted to see most, all without having too much piled onto our plate. However, as time went on and people from outside these provinces expressed a need to have access to similar resources, we decided it was high time to incorporate the leagues of British Columbia and Yukon into our coverage range. On May 17th, 2013 the Canadian Prairie Derby League List was no more and the Western and Central Canada Derby Leagues directory was born! Shortly thereafter, the 2013 Master Bout List was then updated to to reflect these changes as well.

Around the World in 365 Days

As word about our monthly bout schedules and complete list of derby leagues across the prairie region began to spread, it was not long before curious visitors from outside Canada started to take a peek at the site. To date we have had people visit Derby Frontier from 51 countries across the globe with guests most frequently originating from Canada, the United States, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and Australia. Other countries checking out derby news from our region have included France, Sweden, Germany, Japan, Netherlands, India, Brazil, Spain, and Ireland, to name just a few. Check out the following screen caps to see the complete list and numbers!

Get All of the Hits!

September 22nd, 2012 marked our first big milestone for visitors as we proudly celebrated 2,500 hits. 7 months and 23 days later, on May 15th, 2013 we were ecstatic to find we had already reached 10,000 unique hits! In the two and a half months since, an additional 7,500 people have visited Derby Frontier with a solid average of approximately 50 hits on days without major content posts.

10,000 Club! The Derby Frontier Family Grows

At first there was one, but on November 27th, 2012 Hannah “WillKillSome” Wilkinson of the Saskatoon Roller Derby League was brought on board as a semi-regular contributor with her debut article Winter Invitational Leaves No One Out in the Cold. Hannah has since submitted two additional pieces (one on her experiences at Sk8temare 2012 as well as a guide to cleaning your bearings) and is a strong advocate for the site on social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter.  Recognizing just how tremendous an asset she has become to the Derby Frontier family, this past July 24th we officially launched our “Write for Derby Frontier” program to offer writers of all skill levels an opportunity to submit their own articles for publication on the site. We can’t wait to see our staff expand in the coming months!

The Big Stories

Derby Frontier takes pride in bringing reliable, high-quality articles to the region. When we were the first to break news about RDAC’s decision to withdraw support from the Western and Central Tournaments this summer; thousands of individuals flocked to the site with hundreds more sharing the piece around Facebook, Reddit, and Twitter. Similarly, our post on the shrinking number of skating officials garnered a lot of attention and spurred passionate discussion on recruitment efforts all across the country!

Some Final Words of Thanks

Of course, none of this would have ever been possible without the help of the greater derby community. League representatives, skaters, coaches, officials, announcers, and fans of the sport everywhere have played a key role in each and every one of the successes listed above in countless ways. Thank you EVERYONE for all that you have contributed to this site and for your frequent visits!

I would also personally like to thank a number of outstanding bout photographers who have time and time again graciously allowed me to utilize their photos in numerous postings.

This site would be rather boring to look at if it weren’t for your support!

We simply cannot wait to see what the next year of operation will bring!

  1. Congratulations Kevlar! I’m planning to submit an entry to “Write for Derby Frontier”. I just have to get my proposal in place for submission. Derby Frontier is a valuable resource to the Derby community and I encourage others to visit and read the content that is posted here.
