First Provincial Conference Leads to Formation of the Saskatchewan Derby Alliance

Organized by Cody Kurz, aka Kurz So Good, as a means of bringing some coordination and standardization around Saskatchewan, the Sask Mini Conference held just yesterday was chock full of phenomenal conversation about issues which have LONG plagued our community. The big things to take away from this all is that tremendous strides are being taken to bring bigger and better training, officiating and resources to us all for the sake of ease in hosting and organizing bouts, tournaments and boot camps/clinics. To see this fully realized, representatives from several leagues/team/organizations including Saskatoon Roller Derby, Saskatoon Junior Roller Derby, Gapland Rollers, Prince Albert Roller Derby, Redneck Betties, Battlefords Roller Derby League, Lil Chicago Roller Derby, Team Saskatchewan Men’s, Team Saskatchewan Women’s and Derby Frontier, among others, decided it was paramount to form a “Saskatchewan Derby Association Alliance” that would seek out province wide support and funding for the sport.

Nominations are NOW open for 5 available positions on the Saskatchewan Derby Association board. Susanne “Prone TViolence” Babcock will be collecting the nominations. Formal nomination forms will be available by tomorrow evening at the latest. Nominations are encouraged from ALL around the province and would benefit from including skaters, coaches and officials. To qualify, nominees are asked to be currently involved with derby in the province. You can nominate yourself or nominate someone else.

End date for nominations will be December 15, 2013 @11:59pm. The goal is to have this initial board in place by January 2nd, 2014.

Topics discussed included benchmarking standardization, Sask Sport & Kid Sport accreditation, organizing a “centrals” or an annual  provincial tournament (North Battleford discussed as a host option), skater safety, rostering, rankings, WFTDA Applications, recruitment & retention efforts, season scheduling, provincial men’s and women’s team support and province wide sponsorship with businesses such as SaskTel, Credit Unions and Saskatchewan Transit Company (for travel teams).

Also discussed to length was the formation of a NON-affiliated pool of officials to tap from for training, staffing and coordinating events. J-Money, Cody Kurz and Kevin “Kevlar” Dennison will be combining resources and contact lists to formulate a mailing list for officials.
