In the past year, there has been several exciting developments in Canadian derby including new leagues, new WFTDA apprenticeships, tournaments and the formation of the men’s and women’s World Cup Teams. One of the developments I was most excited about, however, was the formation of provincial roller derby associations. I’m lucky enough to sit on the board of Roller Derby Manitoba, as representative for the Turtle Mountain Roller Girls.
Roller Derby Manitoba (or RDM) was formed in the spring of 2013 when Michelle Finlay (Portage ‘n Maim) of Winnipeg Roller Derby League approached members of Wheat city Roller Derby League, PLAP City Rollers and Turtle Mountain Roller Girls about forming a provincial association. Our main objectives are to grow and promote the sport, support the creation of Team Manitoba, facilitate ongoing training for officials, to make an application to Sport Manitoba to be recognized as an official sport and have access to provincial funding.
Currently we’re planning two major events: tryouts for Team Manitoba and the Toban Tussle.
The first round of Team Manitoba tryouts were held on April 26 in Portage La Prairie at the BDO Centre. Tryouts consisted of an hour of scrimmage, agility drills and a written test. 17 skaters from around the province participated, those who were unable to make this one can take part in our second tryouts night, which will be announce very soon. Skaters who have were out on April 26th will be notified of their status within the next 10-days. Keep an eye out on RDM’s Facebook page for more information on the team’s roster as well as for news on the next date for tryouts.
Toban Tussle, a tournament to be held in Portage La Prairie on July 12 and 13, is open to B level teams from all corners of the world, as well as pick up teams. Registration is $150 for each team and guarantees at least 2 games. Registration deadline is May 1. Refs, officials and volunteers are still needed and if you would like to help out, you can apply through links on the Facebook event page.
Most exciting of the weekend will be Team Manitoba’s debut game! If you are on a provincial team and would like to play Team Manitoba, please contact RDM at RDAManitoba@gmail.com!
